Obie Hughes

With over 25 years experience performing, saxophonist Obie Hughes has embraced a full and exciting career in music. He has shared the stage as the opening act for legendary artists such as Chuck Berry, BB King, Kenny Loggins, Joe Cocker, James Brown and also performed behind numerous known acts including Rock n Roll originators Lloyd Price and Roddy Jackson.
Obie is band leader and creator of 3 separate musical groups. His two latest groups include an instrumental group called "The Cocktail Trio". This group performs mostly in small venues, corporate and private events. Another new project is "Obie & The Midnights". This is a 1940s-50s influenced jump rhythm & blues band that is just finsihing its debut mini album due out in the Spring of 2026. Obie is front man, singer and lead sax man. Catch them at retro rock n roll festivals, classic car shows and at blues/rockabilly night clubs. For the past 8 years, Obie also offers his artistically theatrical alias Ellington Hawk. Under the Ellington Hawk name, he combines a poetic, theatrical take on jazz, blues & rock n roll. Live performances are rare, mostly held in small clubs in the western United States and always sold out! He has released one full length album, two EPs and three singles, all available through digital streaming platforms.
Obie also performs regularly with soulful, rhythm & blues band Abby Girl & The Real Deal and has recorded a full length album with the group. You can also catch him on occasion as guest baritone sax player for American artists The Reverend Horton Heat, Nick Waterhouse and U.K artist Jackson Sloan. Prior to these projects, Obie spent 20 + years with roots Rock n Roll band Rumble King. He recorded several full length albums and singles with the band and helped produce an award winning short film. He and the band spent two decades performing original music at festivals, nightclubs, casinos, amphitheaters and corporate events including a 12 year residency at Disneyland.
Through the years Obie has maintained working relationships with a countless number of musicians, nightclub owners and casinos, including over a decade with Disneyland Entertainment. Be sure to catch Obie as a solo act at resorts, casinos, wineries, and bars in the Phoenix, Az Valleys, Palm Springs, Las Vegas and in SoCal’s Los Angeles, Orange County and Inland Empire or as a hired “gun” with national touring bands in clubs or festivals.
